Date-filled Cookies submitted by Mom Johnson
I remember my grandma making these cookies near the holidays in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The original recipe had no instructions so I added my own.

Cook filling ingredients, then add 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Set aside and cool.

Cream shortening with the sugar till fluffy. Add eggs and butter milk and mix till incorporated. Mix all dry ingredients together and then add slowly to the creamed mixture.

Roll small balls of dough and flatten. Place a small amount of the filling on top of flattened dough and cover with second flattened piece. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

v 1 cup shortening
v 2 cups packed dark brown sugar
v 2 eggs
v 1/2 cup buttermilk
v 1 tsp. vanilla
v 3 1//2 cups flour
v 1 tsp. salt
v 1 tsp. soda
v 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

v Filling:
v 2 cups cut-up dates
v 1/2 cup sugar
v 3/4 cup water
v 1/2 cup chopped nuts
